An Ode to Chanel

Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel almost single-handedly changed the fashion game. In a time when women’s fashion was dominated by male designers, she rejected society’s version (read: men’s version) of femininity in favor of her own style based on a functional AND modern aesthetic. Her designs were practical AND chic; she will always be remembered for popularizing the “little black dress,” the Chanel Suit, cap-toe shoes and, of course, the quilted handbag.

Although she first started designing handbags in the 1930s, the classic “2.55” (named as such because it launched in February 1955) embodies Chanel’s design philosophy. Previously, most bags were carried as clutches but this bag was designed to be worn over the shoulder. I don’t know about you, but I am GRATEFUL for this design innovation! (#teamhandsfree) Coco herself wanted a bag that she wouldn’t lose so she added a shoulder strap. She also wanted different compartments for her keys, cigs, and lipstick so she added the inside pocket, back flap and lipstick pocket – genius! Chanel was 71 years old when she released the 2.55 which shows you that it’s never too late to chase your dreams!

At Keeks, we LOVE a Chanel bag. Most are classic, some are funky and they are all fabulous. In my opinion, Chanel is one of our best value bags because while they are still expensive, our prices are very good compared to new retail. Over the last 6 years in particular Chanel dramatically raised prices; the price of a Medium Classic Flap more than doubled from $4,900 in 2016 to $11,300 by 2025. Shopping pre-loved at Keeks can save you thousands! Plus, due to the craftsmanship of these beauties, they retain their value over time. Our top-sellers are the Classic Flap, Grand Shopping Tote (retired in 2005), and Wallet on Chain, but I personally love any piece from the Chanel 19 line. I don’t know about you, but I like to keep some of my investments where I can see them: right on my arm!!

Carry on!
